Guest Night a Huge Success!
On Thursday September 24, Southern Gateway hosted a guest night and had eighteen guys show up to learn more about the chorus and make some great music with us. The evening mostly followed the routine of a typical rehearsal, starting with a warmup, singing through a few songs, and then getting into some detail work on individual songs to help each of us become better singers. A few times throughout the evening, members of the chorus led the group in learning a few "tags," which are the last few measures of a song that are relatively easy to learn and allow singers to ring some chords. After learning a couple tags as a group, eight quartets of guys took the 5-10 minutes during one of our breaks to learn a tag and sang it in front of the group. Each of those quartets made up a fun/silly name for their newly-formed ensemble and let the MC know the name to use when calling them up. This included a very large number of the guests in attendance that evening (but no one was really keeping track of that, so it's anyone's guess as to who sang in which quartet).
The evening also featured a performance by four high school students from Lakota, who have been receiving coaching from the chorus's own Paul Coleman. They did a fantastic job and plan to compete at the Johnny Appleseed District competition in mid-October.
After rehearsal, many of us headed downstairs for some food, drinks, and a chance to get to know each other better... and to do a bit more tag singing.
If you're a guy who likes to sing and is looking for a group of guys to hang out with, don't wait until our next formal guest night to attend. All our rehearsals are open to anyone who would like to listen, and any guy who shows up is welcome to join us on the risers to sing along.
